Just a short time ago

So today is “leap day” that crazy day  that only comes every four years, like presidential elections and olympics. Today is a milestone on this journey, it is the 50th day of this journey. So I wanted to look back and reflect on how things have changed in these last 50 days.

  • I used to eat out every meal of every day. I was probably the most unhealthy eater you had ever met. Just to give you an idea I weighed in at 455, 50 days ago, to maintain that weight I had to eat just north of 5000 calories a day, and I was GAINING WEIGHT!!! Today a filling calorie high day for me is in the 1000 calorie range, and I am completely satisfied and I very rarely get hungry!
  • The gym and I had a love hate relationship. I would go to the gym and workout, but I never really liked going and I would go to fool myself in to thinking I could eat more cause I was “working out” if I went three or four times a week I was doing really well. Now I go to the gym every day without fail, I actually look forward to my time in the gym and feel sluggish if I don’t make it for that day. I am now up to 40-45 mins a day of hard sweat pouring workouts, either swimming laps or on an elliptical machine. I never every would have thought that I would like the gym like I do.
  • I used to not be able to make it though the day with out an afternoon nap. Sure I am still guilty of indulging in an occasional nap in the afternoon, but now they are in the 20 min range not an hour to hour and a half range like they were. I have tons of energy now and absolutely love that I can keep up with the teenagers so much better than I used to be able to.
  • My wardrobe was severely limited. 50 days ago I was down to being able to wear only one pair of jeans, and just a handful of shirts. I only wore slip on shoes because it was too much work bending over to tie my shoes. Today I can once again fit in to everything in my closet, and am now even able to fit in to cloths that were in storage cause they were too small. In fact in not to long I am going to have to once again put cloths in to storage, not because they are small, but because they are way to big!!
  • When I started this journey my blood pressure was high enough the doctors were concerned enough that they were going to put me on medicine for it. Today, my blood pressure is absolutely normal and I no longer am at risk for medicine.

These are just a small sampling of some of the things that are now completely different for me and I am so looking forward to what the next 50 days bring!

Week #7 Update

Well last night was the big weekly weigh in. I am happy to say that I lost another 6.1 this week. Every week I get asked if I thought that was what I was going to lose this week, and I always tell them, ya. It is funny though that after weeks of 8-10 pound losses having a week with 6 pounds i kind of feel let down. However, putting it in to perspective 6 pounds is   more weight loss then I have ever lost in a week on other diets, and I also know that there are people who are currently on this diet that would kill to have those numbers in a single week. So all in all I keep in mind the old saying that, “Rome wasn’t built in a day”! So day by day and week by week, I’ll keep running this race! Here are my numbers so far:

Starting……1/9……455.3……0 pds lost

Week #1……1/16……443.4……11.9 pds lost

Week #2……1/23……432.1……23.2 pds lost

Week #3……1/30……424.0……31.3 pds lost

Week #4……2/6……414.9……40.4 pds lost

Week #5……2/13……409.0……46.3 pds lost

Week #6……2/20……400.0……55.3 pds lost

Week #7……2/27……393.8……61.5 pds lost

As part of class last night we talked about things that we do in our life now that six weeks ago we would have never dreamed of doing. For me some of those things are crazy! Some are simple like only going out to eat twice a week and drinking around a gallon of water a day on a consistent basis. Some things on the other hand are crazy, I know love going to the gym, I go every day always finding a way to fit it into my day. The other thing is doing a hard cardio workout of 35-40 minutes while I am there. So the interesting thing now is, in another 6 weeks where will I be? On Easter Sunday morning what will I be able to about where i am now?

The Shirt update

So I have had several people ask me when they were going to get a fresh picture of me in the shirt. For those who don’t know I decided I was going to get and XL shirt and show you how I fit in to it. Well just a reminder here is how I looked in the shirt day 1.

Now here is what I look like today in that same shirt!

It’s all about the little victories

Today I went to the clothes archive and pulled out a size 48 pair of jeans, I was tight in a size 52 when I started! So I am happy to say that they fit!! I have decided that I am going to have to start wearing dress clothes to the office on a daily basis just so I can wear some of these clothes that I am now growing into, because I know that soon I will be growing right back out of them. So hopefully I will be able to tell you in the not to distant future that I have out grown my 48’s and moved in to the 46’s!

I did get a bit of bad news from the doctor this week about starting to run. They told me they didn’t want me to start running yet, because of the fact that I have so much momentum right now and the possibility that I might hurt myself and derail my current momentum. So for now I will stay with the elliptical, swimming, and the stationary bike and hopefully soon I will be able to add running to my list of cardio!

Week #6 Update

As I promised last night on my twitter feed here is the updated numbers for my current weight loss progress. I talked a couple of days ago about 2 milestones that were on the horizon for me; One, that I would hit the 50 pounds lost mark, and two, that I would drop in to the 300’s on my weight. Well I am super happy to have hit the 50 pound mark, and say I was as close as I could have come to dropping in to the 300’s without actually getting there as I could have gotten. I weighed in at 400.0 last night, oh well a 9 pound loss in a week is amazing!!

Starting……1/9……455.3……0 pds lost

Week #1……1/16……443.4……11.9 pds lost

Week #2……1/23……432.1……23.2 pds lost

Week #3……1/30……424.0……31.3 pds lost

Week #4……2/6……414.9……40.4 pds lost

Week #5……2/13……409.0……46.3 pds lost

Week #6……2/20……400.0……55.3 pds lost

I will say that I am absolutely thrilled with my progress in just 6 weeks. If you would have told me that I could lose nearly 60 pounds in that amount of time, I would have said that you were crazy. Yet here I am on the brink of dropping back in to the 300’s hitting another milestone. I am so grateful for everyone who is following this journey I am on, and the kind words that I am getting from everyone!

Have a blessed day!

A few random thoughts.

  • I enjoyed another successful cheat free weekend on the diet. I was out with the teenagers last night at a pizza place and this sat in front of me, I am glad that I can say I was able to not partake. I would be lying if I didn’t say that I thought more than once about taking a small piece or a just a sausage, but I made it out with just the lingering smells, not the taste!
  • Saturday I once again ventured into the world of HMR entrees I bought a vegetable beef stew last week and was trying think of a good way to use it. I had a recipe for Chicken muffins using the Chicken soup powder from HMR, so I made a “Pot Pie” out of them and it was amazing. When I tell people what I had that for supper saturday night a lot of people turn up their nose and say something like “I can’t stand pot pies!”  I will have to say though that to someone who has only shakes every day the chance to have a hot meal with real food once a week is always amazing. I now use these “in the box” meals as a reward for a great week of hard work on the diet!
  • Like I talked about last week I weighed in at 409! That gives me a total weight loss so far of 46 pounds and some change. This week I have a couple of very large milestones looming on the horizon! The first major one is the 50 pound mark, to hit this in just 6 weeks of dieting would be awesome! The other mark that is close this week is to be able to drop out of the 400’s this is another one of those major milestones that I have the possibility of hitting this week. I have had 10 pound weeks in the past and will most definitely need one if I have any chance of dropping to at least 399.9 tonight.
  • It has been another great weekend in the gym. I have gotten to the point in the journey already that I can’t see myself looking forward to my trips to the gym. I have gotten used to the 30-45 mins of workouts every day and I am even beginning to branch out in to swimming, biking and other areas. It is an awesome feeling to go from dreading a workout to actually enjoying my time!
  • The date has been set for my 5K run! April the 21st there is a 5K race here in town that I will be participating in. I have just over 2 months to continue to lose weight and get ready for this amazing event. I know for a fact that I can complete that distance, but the goal is to run the whole thing non stop without walking! we shall see how it all goes.

Another First

As most of you know most of the reason that began this journey was because of a conversation that I had with my senior minister about running a 5k. Well I was super stoked today when I was able to run a half mile on the treadmill without stopping!! I know that is not a long distance, but for someone who was north of 450 only a few short weeks ago, I am very, very excited!! I hope to work up to running a 5k by the end of April!
