Week #15 Update

Well it is Tuesday morning and it is time for me to update the world on my weekly weight loss progress! Here are a couple of observations from the last week:

  • I am rapidly approaching the XXL shirt range! I can wear some limited styles of those shirts, but I would say in another couple of weeks, I will be able to wear them in regular causal settings!
  • I am now at my lightest weight while living in Arkansas. So if you only know me from my time here, then this is the lightest that I have ever been while living in the south. If you know me from college I have a little ways to go before I am at my lightest weight as an adult!
  • I have an opportunity to speak next week at a community wide forum on weight loss. A couple of “big wigs” from the nation HMR office will be in town, so I was asked to speak as one of a couple local success. my first thought was that I’m only half way to where I want to be, but aparently my success to this point warrents my credentials.
  • Here are my numbers for the week:

Starting……1/9……455.3……0 pds lost

  • As I have talked about on here several times my next major goal is to be in the 200’s by my birthday. That is exactly 10 weeks away, baring any major obstecles I should make that with ease!!
  • also I just wanted to say a quick congrats to my mom. I talked about on here why I decided I needed to lose weight, but my mom was the one who said I needed to try HMR she was already on the program when I started. Last week she crossed the 100 pound lost mark!! Great job Mom!!

Why I can’t afford to cheat

Now that I have been on this “diet” for a while and I have had good success I am beginning to get a new question all the time. The first question I always get is “How are you losing weight?”, but the second question I always get is “when are you going to eat normally again?”. When every I get asked that question I just can’t help but think, eating normally is what got me there in the first place! I also get the “well you can cheat just this once can’t you?”, I always have to tell them no and keep a strict zero tolerance on cheating. So why be so rigid about it? Say I for instance I do grab just a handful of dorrito’s (my favorite chip) that’s almost 150 calories, that’s how many calories I have in an entire shake! The thing is once you open that door it’s like opening Pandora’s Box. I know for a fact that if I ever get a taste for dorrito’s one handful is not enough, before I knew it I would have eaten half a bag of those things and 150 calories is now 1500! Same thing goes for anything that is “out of the Box” for me.

Another reason I have a zero tolerance on cheating is because I have too much momentum going right now. The Patriots didn’t bench Tom Brady in favor of one of their backups in the midst of their Superbowl runs! Everyone in the world would think they are absolutely crazy, but yet we essentially do the same thing when we cheat just once on a diet! While losing at a very steady pace of 6.5 pounds a week, one slip of cheating could set me back a week or more!

So I will continue to be adamant about not cheating, and protecting by momentum!

Blessing!

Week #14 Update

So another week has come and gone already and it is hard to believe it. There are several things that I have learned while being on this diet that looking back 14 weeks amaze me.

  • First of all, we love routine. When I started this journey exercise was boring, painful, and rare at best I had a gym membership that I never used. Now I can’t go a day with out getting in a good workout! If I don’t spend at least 40 minutes doing some sort of high energy calorie burning workout I feel like my day is not complete. In fact Saturday I was in Memphis for the day and didn’t get a chance to really workout good, and when I went to bed that night I really just felt like I was out of sync. When I began this diet if I could complete 25 mins on the elliptical I was going well, now I knock out 40 mins easy and on a much more difficult setting.
  • Secondly if you think your hungry there is a good chance your just thirsty. I can’t tell you how many times my hunger pangs are squelched with just large glass of water.
  • I don’t miss greasy fast food like I thought I would. I am now so far removed from that kind of food that I can watch other people eat it frequently and not be bothered by it.

Here are my numbers for the week:

Starting……1/9……455.3……0 pds lost

Week #1……1/16……443.4……11.9 pds lost

Week #2……1/23……432.1……23.2 pds lost

The side Effects of losing weight

I’ve talked a lot on here about the benefits of losing weight, like buying new clothes, fitting into restaurant booths, or having more energy. Today I want to share with you the my medical numbers the real reason that I am super excited to be losing weight.

Blood Pressure:

When I started this whole diet thing back in January I went in to get my initial numbers checked and when they took my blood pressure it was 210/120. Last week as they checked my blood pressure it was 116/72. Completely normal and below the suggested target!

Cholesterol:

For someone who is my age cholesterol is not something that you tend to worry about, when I started however my total cholesterol was 180, and now today it is at 144.

Triglycerides:

This for me is the one number that was craziest for me, they measure the amount of fat in your blood. The day that I started this diet they were at 298, considered a high level and at risk for lots of bad things. Today they are at 149, a completely normal level.

They also tested both my blood sugar, for risk of Diabetes, and Uric Acid levels, for risk of Gout. Both of these tests were already completely normal when i started the diet. It is absolutely crazy to me to see how much my medical health has been drastically changed for the better!

Week #13 update

Even though I spilled the beans all over Facebook and Twitter last night, I still wanted to blog about this past week on the diet. I did cross that first really big milestone. I lost 6.4 pds this week bring my total weight lost to 101.3!! in just 91 days. So I wanted to bring a frame of reference to the magnitude of this number

  • 18,140 Pennies. That is a boatload of pennies. If I had that many pennies, I would spend my life traveling around to various fountains, making wishes.
  • Over 28,000 Twizzler licorice whips.  I’m rounding this number because my calculations involved a lot of math and conversions from grams to pounds so there is a level of error to take into account.  But that’s a lot of Twizzlers.
  • About 990 Golf balls. That is a lot of water hazards, sand traps, and woods to lose them in!!
  • That’s 39,480 plain M&M’s! I would die of sugar overload if I ate that many.
  • Around 114 footballs, that is a ton of Tim Tebow incompletions…haha.

Needless to say that is a ton of weight to lose in just 91 days! Here is the official chart:

Starting……1/9……455.3……0 pds lost

Week #1……1/16……443.4……11.9 pds lost

Week #2……1/23……432.1……23.2 pds lost

Week #3……1/30……424.0……31.3 pds lost

Week #4……2/6……414.9……40.4 pds lost

Week #5……2/13……409.0……46.3 pds lost

Week #6……2/20……400.0……55.3 pds lost

Week #7……2/27……393.8……61.5 pds lost

Week #8……3/5……386.2……69.1pds lost

Week #9……3/12……379.8……75.5 pds lost

Week #10……3/19……374.5……80.8 pds lost

Week #11……3/26……366.9……88.4 pds lost

Week #12……4/2……360.4……94.9 pds lost

Week #13……4/9……3540.0……101.3 pds lost

I can’t believe that I achieved this first goal, now on to my next goal of being in the 200’s by my birthday on July 5th!

Blessings!

Week #12 update

Well it is hard to believe that last night I finished the initial 12 week series of classes with HMR and am now moving into the “ongoing weight loss” phase of the diet. I will probably stay here until early fall, when I move into the fruits and vegetable phase of the diet. This post will probably be a long post as I have a lot to catch up on.

  • It is amazing to me the difference I have seen in just 12 short weeks! Just Sunday was a classic example of how my life has changed. After an early day at the office getting ready for the Palm Sunday, leading worship and singing with the choir I normally would have gone home and spent a comatose after noon in my bed with the TV on. This week however I went and borrowed a friends bicycle, trying to decide if I want one of my own or not and ended up riding 7 miles. After I finished with the ride I knew that I needed some more exercise for the day, so I walked around the Lake here in town, it’s about 2.5 mile trail. Then I went out with teenagers that night!! Just 12 short weeks ago I would have never thought about packing all of that into one day, but now it has become a normal part of my everyday life.
  • I have now gotten to the point in my journey where I am constantly asked, “What are you doing?” “How does it work?” and “I need to try something like that.” in the last 2 weeks I have given out 6 referral cards to people who are interested in trying HMR in some form. I am always shocked when people ask me so many questions and have such an interest. The support and interest in me and my weight loss never ceases to amaze me.
  • Here are the numbers so far:

Starting……1/9……455.3……0 pds lost

Week #1……1/16……443.4……11.9 pds lost

Week #2……1/23……432.1……23.2 pds lost

Week #3……1/30……424.0……31.3 pds lost

Week #4……2/6……414.9……40.4 pds lost

Week #5……2/13……409.0……46.3 pds lost

Week #6……2/20……400.0……55.3 pds lost

Week #7……2/27……393.8……61.5 pds lost

Week #8……3/5……386.2……69.1pds lost

Week #11……3/26……366.9……88.4 pds lost

Week #12……4/2……360.4……94.9 pds lost

  • I had another great number on the weight loss front, 6.5 pounds in week 12 is a great accomplishment. if I can maintain a good number every week, I should be able to get to my next goal of being under 300 pds by my birthday July 5th.
