So where have I been?

Sorry about the massive cliff hanger that I have left for those of you who follow my blog. About a month ago I left you with the fact that I was only one pound away from my goal weight and that I was heading in to the next week determined to hit my goal weight.

Well…

I made my goal weight, in almost exactly 9 and a half months. I started on the 9th of January and finished up on October the 23rd, on that day I weighed in at 226 pounds and I had lost 228 pounds!! Then two days later I had family come to town, followed by a death in the family, followed by a crazy busy time with the ministry, so I forgot to write about it here! There has also been some other goals met during my blog silence.

  • Saturday the 27th I was able to complete and compete in my first official 5K. I ran it in 31:35 and finished 3rd in my division. It was a super cold morning and the course was not the easiest, but it felt amazing to be out their!!
  • I was also able to fly without a seat belt extender for the first time in my life, that was a truly amazing feeling!
  • I ran 6 miles this last Sunday without stopping, and while feeling great about it!
  • While home for a few days, I got to reintroduce myself to all my family, and I was constantly confused for my younger – and until now smaller – brother!

So now what? That is the question that I always get asked, and to be honest I don’t know. Now that I have found fit, I am learning that finding fit may have been the easy part, keeping it may be the real challenge! I will most definitely keep you up to date and in the loop about how it looks for me fighting the fight and sticking with it! Week #37 update

Well after a week of vacation and weight gain of 2 pounds, I knew that it was time for my to get back into the box, back on track, and back to the basics! Well I am happy to say that it has worked out in a great way, I have lost 9 pounds this week! That makes my weight loss a staggering 221 pounds! That means that I am only 6 pounds away from my goal of 227 pounds! Oh what a great day that will be!!

It has been interesting for me to try and navigate the world of eating right and staying on the diet. This last week I ate out of the box 2 times and even though it was awesome, I felt guilty enough to work out extra hard those days, we will see how long that feeling lasts.

Bringing everyone up to speed

 

Well I must apologize for the near two-week absence from my blog. I have been busy with some things and spent some time on vacation as well, so my blogging got put on the back burner.

Well I must say that their has been a lot of things go on that I need to catch everyone up on so here it goes:

  • I ran almost five miles last week!! I never thought that I would get in to or like running like I do, but I must say that it is quite awesome! I am currently working on being able to run a six-mile loop near my house. This also serves as good training for the 5K that I have coming up.
  • I have completely made the transition from all shakes to all real food, now I am eating, and navigating the crazy world of regular food while trying to finish up my dash to the finish line.
  • I am now only 15 pounds away from the finish line of 227 pounds. I still can’t believe that I am this close to my goals.
  • As I said earlier I was on vacation this last week, and went into it with no plan, or illusions that I would stay on my diet. As a result I posted the first weight gain this journey, 2.3 pounds to be exact. There are several things that I have learned from this last week.
    1. Old habits are super easy to come back. Eating like I did last week, shocked me how I fell right back into those old habits.
    2. Without any exercise in your life, weight gain is almost inevitable.
    3. As amazing as I remembered all that bad food being to eat, I forgot about how bad I felt after eating it. Tired from to many carbs, sluggish from over eating, and addicted to the act of eating not eating for sustenance.
  • After my trek back into the waters of over indulgence, I have been more committed than ever to seeing this through. Not only to my goal weight, but to the lifestyle change that I know it is going to take.
  • I always seem to work better when I have a goal that I am working to, right now my major goal is to make it to my goal weight by Halloween. The other goal that I have is to work up my distance so that I can run a Marathon before my two-year Weigh loss journey start date!

A new level to reach for

So I have talked previously on this blog about my desire to run a 5K or 10K at some point before thanksgiving time. It looks like according to the local racing calendar there is a 10K on the 3rd of November that I am going to be preparing for and running in. I have already begun to prepare for this race, by doing some road running 2-3 times a week. I got up and ran 2 miles this morning, after spending an hour on the elliptical yesterday that was all my legs would let me do. I am really encouraged though, cause that gives me 3 months to work up to the 10K level and I have no doubts that I can make it there. So now that my goal is public and official, I need to go and work hard at reaching that next level.

Week #27 updates

I must apologize for not posting on this blog for some time. I spent a week at camp with Junior Highers last week, and have not quite caught up with everything yet. I have had lots of little things happen since we have talked last so let me catch you up!

  • I had a great time at my birthday and while there one of my youth ministry kids took an amazing picture of me in “the Shirt”! It perfectly shows how much things have changed, so I thought I would share it with you here! 
  • While I was at camp I took the opportunity to do a lot of hiking in the backwoods of southern Missouri. It was so cool to be able to get lost on the back trails and have tons of energy to hike for over 2 hours! I had lots of tics, however that’s just a sign of being active and out in nature, you don’t get tics when you’re sitting on the couch!
  • One of the craziest figures they told us in class was that for every pound you lose you take 4 pounds of pressure of your joints. That means I have taken over 700 pounds of pressure off my joints!! That figure alone is simply amazing.
  • Last Friday night I wanted to try test myself and see how far I could run, so I set off running in the neighborhood, I ran and to my surprise I was able to keep running. In fact I ran for 30 min, a full half hour without stopping or feeling like I would die of exhaustion!
  • It has been hot and dry here in Jonesboro, no real measurable rain since the beginning of June and temperatures in the triple digits most days. I have been stunned how much easier I can tolerate the heat.
  • This last monday at my 27th weigh in I lost another 10 pounds, that brings my total to 177 pounds!! It is simply amazing to me that I have been able to continue to lose around 5 pounds every week this far into the diet and in the midst of summer camp season!   • Now that fruits and veggies are on the horizon I am definitely looking forward to the day that I get to add them into my diet!

Week #25 Update

Well i can’t believe that I have already been on this journey for 25 weeks, in some ways it seems like it has been forever and in other ways it seems like it was just yesterday that I started. At the start of this journey I made a goal for myself to get under the 300 pound mark by my birthday, and at yesterday’s weigh in I weighed in at 287, a full 13 pounds under my target! When I set that goal, I hoped I would reach it, but it was such a lofty goal I never really imagined that I would really get there, yet here I am! The next goal I have on my radar is to lose 200 pounds by the time I go to Colorado in the fall, that is 13 weeks to lose about 33 pounds. A lofty goal no doubt, but at this point I have full confidence that I can make that goal.

People have been asking me what my ultimate goal is, and I always seem to give a wishy-washy answer. So I have finally come up with a tangible goal for myself, I want to weigh less than the amount of weight that I have lost. For me that means the magic number is 228 pounds, when I have lost that much weight I will weigh in at 227 pounds, maybe that is my Christmas goal!?!?

Week #22 update

I really must apoligize for not having an update last week. The summer camp season has started and I was at camp with senior highers last week. The week was exahausting, but very rewarding as well. The good news is that i was able to stay 100% in the box the entire week. I mean in retrospect when I look back at it camp cafeteria food does not rate with hot wings or burgers, and if I can resist them then that should have been no problem, and it wasn’t!

I was able to do a couple of things while at camp that I normally wasn’t able to do. I played ultimate freesbee with all the kids for about an hour and a half one afternoon, and then played soccer the next day! I was so excited to actually be in the game that I didn’t notice that I really was acttually bad at it…haha.

These two weeks were also really sucesfull on the weight loss front as well in the two weeks I was able to lose 10.3 pounds, bringing my total up to 151.1!! I am so pumped to cross another huge milestone like this! You can see my complete numbers here.

I am off to another wild adventure with teenagers next week, so an update may not be likely, but you can rest assured that I will be in the box and on the way to more weight loss sucess!
