10 things I never thought I would say…ever!

I got to thinking about all of things that have changed so dramatically in my life in this last year, and it got me to thinking just how much! So I wanted to share with you 10 things I have said recently that taken in the context of where I have come from are shocking!

  1. “Do you have that in a Large?” Here in the past few weeks, I have begun the process of shopping for new winter clothes, and since I can now fit into a Large, that means any and all stores are an option for me! It used to be I could shop at only one of the department stores in the mall, now it’s any store, any time, anything I want! I’m like a kid in a candy store with all of these choices!!
  2. “You want my double X shirts, they are to big for me?” When I started losing weight back in January, double X clothes were just a dream to me. Now, they are mostly to big on me and frankly they’re about to go the way of my old “fat clothes”!
  3. “I need to buy a reflective shirt so I can run at night!” I said this to a friend last week, when I took off on a crisp, moonlit night for a great evening run. The run was awesome, but probably not the safest thing that I have ever done it my life!
  4. “I only ran four and half miles today.” I have come so far from that first night when I attempted to walk a 5K distance!
  5. “Can we go eat somewhere that has a good salad?” I am not going to kid with you and pretend that I don’t eat bad food, but that is now more the exception instead of the norm. Sunday after church, I made sure our group went to a place that had great salad, not just typical unhealthy “american” food.
  6. “Why am I shopping in the big and tall section?” There was a huge sale at one of the area department stores last weekend, it has a great big and tall section and I have shopped there for years. I caught myself standing in the middle of that section asking why am I here? To my delight I got to move to the much larger, “normal people” cloths section!
  7. “I’m out of fruit, how am I going to start my day?” This actually happened to me this week, I woke up and made my morning bowl of oatmeal and looked to add a couple of cups of fresh fruit, only to find I was all out. It was a sad start to my day and yet at the same time strange to think I have come so far from my gas station breakfast days.
  8. “Man, have I really had 10 servings of Fruits and Veggies today?” That is an earth shattering change to go from a person who’s closest interaction with vegetables was french fries, and I never ate fruit unless it was in a pie or stuffed in a doughnut!
  9. “So I guess losing 222 pounds is kind of a big deal.” Most days it doesn’t sink in to me that the amount of weight that I have lost. I mean I have now lost the equivalent of an average overweight adult male. I guess it is true when you live with yourself you don’t always see or wrap your brain around the magnitude of your accomplishments.
  10. “Don’t worry about it I’m used to people walking right by me.” I always make this statement in the following scenario.
    • I’m walking through the mall, store, or athletic game, when I see a former student or acquaintance.
    • I do the whole smile, head nod, and “Hey, how are you?”
    • They walk right past me with out even acknowledging me or look at me with a “Who is that?” look on their face.
    • I keep walking slightly peeved they didn’t at least give me a courtesy nod.
    • They come running back and say something to the effect of: “Wow, I didn’t even recognize! You look so different, how did you do it?”
    • I say “don’t worry about it, I’m used to it…”

I will never get used to that whole exchange, however I must say that I have come to love that response the most!

So there it is a list of things I never, ever thought in a million years thought I would say, or say again in some cases, yet I say these all on a regular basis. It is most definitely an ongoing process adjusting to life, post weight loss. I do know that life will be fuller because of this journey!

Week #27 updates

I must apologize for not posting on this blog for some time. I spent a week at camp with Junior Highers last week, and have not quite caught up with everything yet. I have had lots of little things happen since we have talked last so let me catch you up!

  • I had a great time at my birthday and while there one of my youth ministry kids took an amazing picture of me in “the Shirt”! It perfectly shows how much things have changed, so I thought I would share it with you here!
  • While I was at camp I took the opportunity to do a lot of hiking in the backwoods of southern Missouri. It was so cool to be able to get lost on the back trails and have tons of energy to hike for over 2 hours! I had lots of tics, however that’s just a sign of being active and out in nature, you don’t get tics when you’re sitting on the couch!
  • One of the craziest figures they told us in class was that for every pound you lose you take 4 pounds of pressure of your joints. That means I have taken over 700 pounds of pressure off my joints!! That figure alone is simply amazing.
  • Last Friday night I wanted to try test myself and see how far I could run, so I set off running in the neighborhood, I ran and to my surprise I was able to keep running. In fact I ran for 30 min, a full half hour without stopping or feeling like I would die of exhaustion!
  • It has been hot and dry here in Jonesboro, no real measurable rain since the beginning of June and temperatures in the triple digits most days. I have been stunned how much easier I can tolerate the heat.
  • This last monday at my 27th weigh in I lost another 10 pounds, that brings my total to 177 pounds!! It is simply amazing to me that I have been able to continue to lose around 5 pounds every week this far into the diet and in the midst of summer camp season! Make sure and check out the numbers page to see the official numbers.
  • Now that fruits and veggies are on the horizon I am definitely looking forward to the day that I get to add them into my diet!

Some random thoughts for the week

I have had one of those weeks where you have several odd things happen to you and when you string them all together and they make for an odd week. It all started yesterday when I went into a resturant that I used to frequent, but when they built a new one closer to the house I quit going in their as often. I was meeting someone on that side of town so I was back in their again yesterday. I walked in the door and the same manger was there as well a couple of his workers, needless to say I had to reintroduce myself to them and they were shocked and in complete awe of my weight loss. After I sat down a complete stranger came over to me, she had overheard my converstion with the manger about my weight loss and wanted to hear all about it. We stood there and talked for 20 mins talking about my weight loss journey, how the diet worked and where I want to go from here. The event rememinded me how big of a deal losing 150 pounds is, and what an inspiration my story is.

I noticed it has been way to long since I posted a real set of “mug shots” so here are a fresh set.

Week #20 Update

It doesn’t hardly seem possible that we are already 20 weeks in to this journey. It seems like only yesterday, I was living on fast-food, wearing 52″ jeans and 4X shirts, and laughing off any thought of exercise. Fast forward to today and my oh my how things have changed!! I now never touch anything that is not “in my box”, in fact the thought of always eating fast food doesn’t even appeal to me right now. Today I am wearing 40-42″ jeans and a XL-XXL shirt, as seen by the recent update “the Shirt” is now super close to fitting! The other major change is now exercise has become an absolute essential in my daily routine!

There are several things that have happened recently that I want to update you on:

  • I have been putting off running partially on doc’s advice and partly cause of pain I have been having in my hip. I was feeling good saturday and decided to give running a try and actually ran for about 10 minutes, then yesterday I went out again and this time I ran a mile! All of that running and I actually had no pain, and felt better after running than I do after a long walk! I cannot begin to tell you how big of an accomplishment that is, the last time I ran a complete mile was when I was a freshman in high school, that is almost 20 years ago! Now the next goal is to run a complete lap around Craighead Lake (2.4 miles) and then the outer road (2.9 miles). Maybe a 5K is as not as far in my future as I thought it was.
  • With June also comes my busy travel season, I will be gone with teenagers 3 of the next 7 weeks. I will also have lots of day trips, and lots of other miscellaneous events that could potentially derail my progress. So after 20 weeks of faithful “in the box” commitment these next 8 weeks will put that resolve and dedication to the test!
  • Due to the fact that the length of the numbers list is getting so long I have created a seperate page just for it, and you can fid it here.
  • I am now only 14.5 pounds away from being in the 200’s a feat I hope to accomplish by my birthday on the 5th of July! What a great gift to myself that will be. The other part of that goal is to be able to wear “the Shirt” out in public on my birthday!

The Shirt update

I didn’t realize until last night at church that it has been a while since i have posted an update to the shirt picture so I thought I would do that today. This morning when I looked at the side picture I took, it was the first time that I was able to see myself and think “Wow, I really have lost a lot of weight!!!”  So I thought I would give you the whole progression from start to today:

Week #18 Update

It hardly seems possible to me that it has already been 18 weeks on this journey. I started the 2nd week of January and here it is almost Memorial Day already, crazy! It was an interesting week for sure so I’ll get right to the numbers, and talk about some of the crazy things from this past week. Here are the numbers for last week:

Starting……1/9……455.3……0 pds lost

Week #1……1/16……443.4……11.9 pds lost

Week #2……1/23……432.1……23.2 pds lost

Week #4……2/6……414.9……40.4 pds lost

Week #5……2/13……409.0……46.3 pds lost

Week #6……2/20……400.0……55.3 pds lost

Week #7……2/27……393.8……61.5 pds lost

Week #8……3/5……386.2……69.1pds lost

Week #9……3/12……379.8……75.5 pds lost

Week #10……3/19……374.5……80.8 pds lost

Week #11……3/26……366.9……88.4 pds lost

Week #15……4/23……341.4……113.9 pds lost

Week #16……4/30……335.5……119.8 pds lost

Week #17……5/7……331.3……124 pds lost

Week #18……5/14……325.9……129.4 pds lost

  • I was really excited to see my self get back on my losing track and get back to that 5 pound lost level, where I like to be most weeks. It amazes me how much of a difference water makes on your diet, that was really the biggest difference that I made last week was a recommitment to water intake. I was getting somewhere between 5-7 quarts of water a day, a marked increase from previous weeks.
  • I have now lost 130 pounds, and sometimes the magnitude of the numbers that I am losing doesn’t really sink in to me so I tried to find somethings to compare it to. So here are some things that weigh about 130 pounds: 15.5 gallons of water, Katy Perry (don’t ask me how I know that, just that when I googled “what weighs 130 pds” that was the top hit), that’s about 694 chicken wings, 231 baseballs, about 3.5 Kindergartners, about 29,120 plain M&M’s.
  • I was at Wal-Mart last night picking up some cheap T-shirts to get be by during this weight loss, cause my old clothes are now clown clothes on me. As I was looking through the stacks I did notice that my size was not the largest one on the rack, it has been years and years since that was the case. My shopping almost always consisted going to the rack and finding the largest size and praying that I fit into it, not anymore!!
  • I was sitting at my desk the other day talking with someone when I realized that I was able to comfortably cross my leg, that is something I couldn’t begin to tell you when the last time it was I was able to do that. I have decided that it is most definitely about the little things!!
  • I am still getting used to the idea that I can wear a 2X shirt comfortably and 42″ jeans, both of these are sizes that I haven’t seen in ages. I am about 10 pounds away from size 40 jeans and then I am knocking on the door of the size 30’s for jeans, that will definetly be a great day!

Week #16 update

Well it’s been another crazy week in my world and I haven’t had the opportunity to write on my blog like I should. I do have several things that i would like to share with yall!

  • I managed to survive cooking for our Wednesday night meal here at church. We as a staff had to cook and so I was recruited to make my chiken spaghetti recipe, which is really rich. I was able to cook the entire meal and not sample even a taste of any of it. I do have to say that it was one of my finer moments.

  • I found another before picture the other day, this one was taken at the churches fall festival last year, I remember that day as one of my buisest of the year. It was on a sunday and I was on my feet from about 7:30 that morning until about 10:00 that night, my mom was here visiting and I remember going home that night and putting my feet up and my knees and feet were in so much pain I could hardly stand it! It is just another reminder of how far that I have come.
  • Some days it doesn’t hit me that I can now do what I can do, for example  this past Sunday afternoon I went an rode bike for a while. When I say a while it was 9 miles, I mean 9 miles is an eternity! Four months ago I would have gotten winded getting the bike out of the storage locker. I did do better then I thought I would do, I only had to push the bike up one hill. I was told by a friend not to worry about that hill though she said she was riding up that hill for a couple months before she could make it with out pushing. I will say I felt amazing after the ride,  I was not really sore or completly wore out that I couldn’t function. It was just nice to be outside and enjoying the great spring weather.
  • My adventures in new clothes continue, about once a week, I seek out new sizes or clothes in my closet that I have never been able to wear. I have several shirts in my closet that were given to me on different occassions, such as football playoffs or baseball state tournaments that I have never been able to wear. Now here I am in 2012 wearing shirts that say “playoffs 2010” or “state baseball 2008” they may be old, but they are the first time I have been able to wear them! So if you see me out in an old dated t-shirt you know it is because I am just now able to get in to it!
  • Speaking of shirts, it has been a while since I have updated you on the progress of “the shirt” if you have been following me since I stated this adventure I bought an XL shirt back in December with the idea that some day I would be able to wear it out in public. The top picture was taken right around christmas time an XL shirt with size 52 jeans that were snug. The second picture was taken Saturday, that same shirt and wearing size 42 jeans!! I have not worn size 42 jeans since I was in high school, even when I lost a lot of weight right after college I could only get in to size 44 jeans, and then I weighed 35 pounds less. I guess all that time on the elliptical is paying off!!
